"I think that I shall never see
A billboard lovely as a tree
Indeed, unless the billboars fall
I'll never see at tree at all.
Ogden Nash
BLASPHEMY:
The big corporations that are official sponsors of the olympics have littered our town with athletic ads. There were already ads in most of these places already so I don't feel like there's been much of an increase in the square footage of signage in the city, but the uniformity of the ads has begun to make them all the same, blending together like one giant montage of olympic logos and men jumping hurdles. Anyone seen Brazil, the Terry Gilliam film? There's a seen in which the hero is in a truck headed down the highway. The highway is walled in billboards and over the tops of the billboards the audience, but not the hero, can see the wasteland that once was the countryside, laid waste to support the industries the billboards advertise. Keep it in mind the next time the olympic logo flies by you again.
