EAR PLUGS
Halloween in 1998 featured one of my favorite double-bills of all time, Truckadelic and Drive By Truckers. There was probably another act in there but apparently I didn't write it down in 1998, and I only took a handful of photos or I might not remember the night at all.
But I definitely remember Truckadelic in drag, introducing themselves as Jane West, another excellent local act. Ted Weldon said there were more hairy legs in fishnets than a night at Backstreets (mine included). I slipped back stage and snapped a few shots before the show, then must've run out of film because I only got a handful of the show itself. Ah, film - remember it? Back then, I was shooting everyhting on black and white 3200 so I didn't have to use a flash. The prints look pretty good but they don't scan well. This is what you get.
Afterward, Drive By Truckers came to the stage dressed as Truckadelic, surprising even the guys from Truckadelic. It was a very meta experience.
(From here down is the original post, minus promotion of the new Ear Plugs gallery that had just gone live but has since been pulled down in favor of reviews with photos. Occasionally, I'll find some old photos and pair them with an old review, but time and motivation are in short supply in 2020.)
In case you dont read every work of local music press you can get your hands on you might have missed the Nashville Pussy CD release on Mercury of Let Them Eat Pussy, with an EP taped to it of Eat More Pussy, another 6 songs for the same price as the previous release on a smaller label. Its the first new CD Ive bought in probably FIVE years and more than worth it, if you like Fucking Rawk and Roll, Baby. It still doesnt live up to the live show but no recording could.
I also picked up the U2 limited Best Of double CD with the b-sides CD, a good collection for those who dont have time to find all those damned singles and imports and such, or for those of us too lazy to blow the dust off the vinyl and spin up the turntable. Not sure if it was worth the dough or not. Guess you have to be a hardcore U2 fan.
However, I could not purchase Aint No Funk Like N.O. Funk, though I really want it. The sticker price ($18 at Tower) was just too much so if anyone has a copy they want to get rid of let me know!!!!!
