BLASPHEMY
Where there's smoke, there's cancer. Tobacco companies have started a bizarre
ad campaign, stating basically that if the government raises the prices of death
and addiction it will bring more death and corruption through the black market
that will arise. Yeah... right. Even funnier is the big ad in the Loafing every
week from Winston picturing a fat ass with ample crack showing (yeah, I use
the word crack here as a pun intentionally) and a caption that reads "Why
can jean ads be this real?" Well why can't Winston ads be that real? Why
not show some fat ass on his death bed hooked up to a lung machine with a pile
of bloody tumors on his chest?
Coincidentally enough the big Rolling Stone 30th Anniversary issue has a big
blues section that contains a series of Winston ads, two of which show our favorite
local blues venue Northside Tavern. Not one of the ads mentions how cool it
is to smoke, however, they just stick the logo at the bottom of each page.
Sure, everybody dies from something, I just rather have an oncoming truck or
just old fashioned old age any day.
Smoke 'em if you got 'em, dumbass, you won't be alive with pleasure much longer.
"Why didst thou promise such a beauteous day,
And make me travel forth without my cloak
To let base clouds o'ertake me in my way,
Hiding thy bravery in their rotten smoke?"
from Shakespeare's Sonnets
