FILM FLAM
Degenerate GT and I went to a preview screening of The Island last Thursday. I
hadn't heard a thing about the film, which is how I prefer to go into a movie. I
hate knowing the plot in advance and I'd rather draw my own conclusions. That's
the nice thing about free screenings - you don't feel ripped off if it sucks.
The Island features Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson and a lot of impressive
special effects - stuff blowing up, stuff falling down, car crashes, all the
things you expect from a big budget action flick. But things start off moody and
creepy like a utopian futuristic sci-fi flick, much like Logan's Run. Like
Logan's Run, you soon learn this utopia is a false one and the characters have
to make their escape, resulting in the aforementioned booms and bangs. It's good
if you don't mind a little excessive spectacle for the sake of spectacle. The
chases and fights in the last 20 minutes of the film feel a bit redundant.
I don't want to give anything away about the plot, since it's interesting and
has a surprise or two, but if you already know why they must make their escape
you might also know the film is a remake of 1979's The Clonus Horror.

From the reviews I've read of The Clonus Horror, The Island is a vast
improvement. But I'll take just about any opportunity to ogle Scarlett
Johansson. DAMN, that woman is stunning. Ewan McGregor ain't hard on the eyes
either, judging from the drool on GT's chin.
