BLASPHEMY
Every American taxpayer would get a $100 rebate check to offset the pain of
higher pump prices for gasoline, under an amendment Senate Republicans hope to
bring to a vote Thursday.

OK, people, this is just stupid. Aside from the fact that we all know it's just
a way of buying votes for incumbents in trouble, if you want real change to
fuel-efficient vehicles in this country the only way it's ever going to happen
is if everyone suffers enough to change. Gas companies have no interest in
keeping prices low (record profits AND tax breaks at the same time – what did
you expect when you elected oil barons?), the auto manufacturers have no
incentive to change as long as we keep buying their inefficient products, we as
a people obviously have no motivation to save the environment unless it's
because we can't afford to do otherwise - high gas prices are the only thing
that will change our bad habits in this country. We still pay less than the rest
of the industrialized world, so quit your bitching and go bio-diesel, get a
hybrid, or, God forbid, take mass transit.
Yes, this is coming from a guy who's daily driver is a 37-year-old Ford with a
429 cubic inch engine that requires premium, and lots of it. I'm as bad as any
SUV on the road, so I, too, am a cheap gas junkie. But I know me - I won't
change unless I HAVE to, even when I WANT to. So congress can keep their one
shot of methadone $100 (shit, that's only 2 tanks of gas in my car
anyhow) and forget adding to the deficit we've racked up in the war for oil.
The only way I'm giving up my sinful ways is when I can't afford them any more.
Blessed is the salvation of high gas prices!
In other news, I’ll never use Yahoo again:
Reporters Without Borders has obtained a copy of the verdict in the case of
Jiang Lijun, sentenced to four years in prison in November 2003 for his online
pro-democracy articles, showing that Yahoo! helped Chinese police to identify
him.
It is the third such case, following those of Shi Tao and Li Zhi, proving the
implication of the American Internet company.
