The setup at Shim Sham was superior to the Howling Wolf, but still could have used some seating. A few stools were scattered around the walls, but the rest of the joint was standing room only. At least the floor was terraced so that you could see the stage from just about anywhere.
Sunday's shows were broken up between intermissions for dancing. A DJ whipped up a frenzy of 60's instrumental R&B-based garage go-go rock, some really killer stuff. Once in a while someone in full 60's glam would walk by and for a moment make you wonder what decade it really was. Then the guy with a pierced nose and wearing black vinyl pants would walk by and change the effect to something wholly post-modern. The crowd was as eclectic, and smiling as often, as the performances on stage. | The Shim Shamettes did a lovely fan dance. |
Sunday's non-traditional pinnacle was performed by Dita von Teese, an absolutely stunning brunette with the most amazing costumes, paired with Catherine D'Lish, an equally lovely redhead in equally beautiful costumes. The stage was set with a pair of classy dressing rooms where each of the girls stripped down to nearly nothing, then donned lace robes for a mock phone call from one to the other. This climaxed in lesbian phone sex right there on stage. (Top that at your local strip club!) Then Dita walked across to Catherine's boudoir and they rolled around on the bed together for a few minutes before the curtains closed. The audience, guys and girls alike, practically swooned.

There were more traditional acts, including a fun King Kong themed number by locals The Shim Shamettes, the occasional lost pasty, the fantastic choreography of the The Devil-Ettes, on and on into the night until yet again my feet could take no more. | |
